Ο Στέφανος Κοντός γεννήθηκε το 1972 στα Ιωάννινα. Κατά την παιδική του ηλικία ανέπτυξε έντονη γοητεία για τη θάλασσα και τον υποβρύχιο κόσμο. Σε ηλικία 12 ετών «δανείστηκε» τη φωτογραφική μηχανή του πατέρα του και από εκεί ξεκίνησε την παθιασμένη αναζήτηση για την υποβρύχια φωτογραφία. Σήμερα είναι ένας πετυχημένος υποβρύχιος φωτογράφος / κινηματογραφιστής που κάνει όλη τη δουλειά του χωρίς τη χρήση καταδυτικού εξοπλισμού, όλα με μία ανάσα.
Ο φωτογράφος με έδρα την Αθήνα είναι επίσης εκπαιδευτής ελεύθερων καταδύσεων. Αφιερώνει αρκετούς μήνες του χρόνου γυρίζοντας μιας μεγάλης ποικιλίας εκδηλώσεις ελεύθερης κατάδυσης, που περιλαμβάνουν εκπαιδευτικές, εξερευνητικές και αγωνιστικές εκδηλώσεις.
Συνεργάζεται με ιδρύματα ελεύθερης κατάδυσης και ειδικούς παγκοσμίως σε μια προσπάθεια να εξελίξει και να προωθήσει τη μοναδική προοπτική της φωτογραφίας ελεύθερης κατάδυσης.
